Lakaynan (la-KAY-nah), meaning ‘the home’ in Haitian Creole, is an interior design + build studio based in Los Angeles, CA. ABOUT THE FOUNDER

Inspired by the deep personal significance of home and the ways in which our environments shape our lives, Michelle M. Burney first conceptualized Lakaynan in 2013 as a visual exploration of lifestyle, design, and identity. In 2023, she evolved it into a full-service design studio, rooted in a deep understanding of the connection between home and well-being.

With a Bachelor of Science in International Business from San Francisco State University and an Associate of Arts in Interior Design from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, Michelle’s expertise bridges both the creative and strategic aspects of the industry. Her background in high-end residential and hospitality design, combined with hands-on experience in construction, allows her to seamlessly execute projects with both artistic vision and technical precision.

Her signature design style blends organic textures with modern architectural details, creating layered, lived-in spaces that feel effortlessly curated.

With a calm yet magnetic presence, Michelle brings an intuitive approach to client collaboration, ensuring each space reflects the unique rhythms of those who inhabit it.
